About this Event

As the first black institution of higher learning to offer a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, Howard University is a renowned establishment for the study and performance of jazz. Appropriately, Howard University has partnered with DCJF to pay tribute to one of its and DC’s own—the legendary multi-instrumentalist, Andrew White. White’s skills as a musician earned him recordings and touring gigs with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Weather Report, Otis Redding, and McCoy Tyner, among others. Most notably, White’s meticulous transcriptions of 650 John Coltrane solos (virtually everyone on record) has earned him the moniker “Keeper of Trane”.

This tribute will be led by two-time Grammy-nominated pianist, composer, Howard University alum, and Blackbyrds founding member Kevin Toney. He will be joined by bassist Steve Novosel, drummer Keith Killgo, saxophonist Antonio Parker, and special guest Marcus Strickland. In keeping with the commitment to preserve and perpetuate jazz through instruction and performance, this free “mini-show” education concert is only open to Howard University College of Music students.

PROOF OF VACCINATION/NEGATIVE TEST REQUIRED: Everyone attending 2021 DC JazzFest events (indoor and outdoor) will be required to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative test within the past 72 hours of the day of the event along with a matching photo ID. Proof of vaccination can be your physical vaccine card or a photo of your vaccine card. Documentation must have your full legal name that matches to your proof of identification (driver's license, passport, etc.). See more details at: FAQs | DCJF (dcjazzfest.org).

Event Photos

Born in D.C. and raised in Nashville, White returned to the city in 1960 to study music composition and theory at Howard University. White soon helped found the J.F.K. Quintet, in which he played alto saxophone and served as musical director. It became the house band at Bohemian Caverns, the vibrant jazz venue at 2001 11th Street, NW. The group released two albums, New Jazz Frontiers from Washington (1961) and Young Ideas (1962). A third recording remains unreleased. In addition to White’s powerful, energetic playing, the recordings feature several of his compositions.

The accomplishments of Andrew White are as impressive as they are varied. In an unimaginable feat of focus and endurance, White, who died on November 11, 2021, transcribed almost every recorded Coltrane solo. White’s transcriptions are cataloged at the Library of Congress.
