📚 Dayton Society of Artists: Book Club
Featuring Camille Pissarro: The Audacity of Impressionism by Anka Muhlstein
The Dayton Society of Artists Book Club continues, bringing artists, historians, and community members together for thoughtful conversation and shared learning.
Our next selection, Camille Pissarro: The Audacity of Impressionism, offers an engaging and intimate portrait of Camille Pissarro—a central yet often underrecognized figure in the development of Impressionism. A mentor and collaborator to artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh, Pissarro helped shape the direction of modern painting.
Muhlstein’s book also explores the complexities of Pissarro’s identity. Born in the Caribbean and of Jewish descent, he navigated a life shaped by both belonging and difference. Through his letters and work, the book reveals an artist deeply committed to independence, collaboration, and creative freedom.
