About this Event
West Fork Duchesne Beaver Complexes 1-3, Duchesne Ridge
Join Hogle Zoo staff on a survey of several series of beaver dams along the upper reaches of the West Fork Duchesne River, found on the southwest slope of the Uintas! Meet at the Zoo Front Gate at 7:45AM. Look for Hogle Zoo staff waiting for you there.
Transportation: Depart from Utah's Hogle Zoo. Ride in Zoo vehicle. Leave your car in our main guest lot. It is about a 1.5hr drive to the site with a stop in Heber.
Difficulty: 3/10. We will survey 3 different beaver complexes all in close proximity. There are no major hikes to get to the sites though we will be on our feet walking for the full day (lunch and rest breaks). It is off-trail and will involve walking through dense vegetation and crossing sections of water.
Difficulty rating 1-10:
1 - easy, little elevation gain, on-trail, short distance hiking
10 - hard, significant elevation gain, uneven terrain, off-trail, dense vegetation, long distance hiking
What to bring/wear: Comfortable hiking clothes and close-toed shoes you don't mind getting dirty/wet (light weight hiking pants/work pants recommended over shorts). A daypack with a packed lunch, snacks, water (minimum 32oz), sun protection (hat, glasses), rain jacket (rain pants if you have them), warm layers if needed, extra socks (keep these in your backpack). Water/rain boots or waders are recommended but not required (your feet are likely to get wet). Some prefer to wear light weight long sleeve shirts to protect them from getting scratched by vegetation. You may also want comfortable dry shoes to change into at the end of the day.
