About this Event
DAVID LYNCH'S LOS ANGELES with AMANDA KARKOUTLY
in the PRS Auditorium
"We live inside a dream" -Twin Peaks
"it's like... it's like I'm having the most beautiful dream... and the most terrible nightmare" - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
David Lynch's Los Angeles will explore the shadows beneath the sunshine of Los Angeles, a city that embodies Lynch's famous duality: beauty and terror, sunshine and lurking shadows, both the dream and the nightmare.
Amanda Karkoutly of @cahuengapast will present a slideshow of select filming locations from Lynch's works, go through some unique histories of locations, and celebrate parts of Los Angeles that held meaning for one of the city's greatest champions. Lynch's work encourages finding both the terror and the paradise in the mundane, the seemingly innocuous dumpsters and roads of Los Angeles.
Come walk in the footsteps of genius and see how Los Angeles is a city that truly deserves the description of "Lynchian."
Amanda Karkoutly is a local historian and lecturer who writes the CahuengaPast Instagram and newsletter, offering a unique view of history by studying the grand homes of Los Angeles and their former residents, and examining the intersection of architecture, creativity, crime, and metaphysical elements in Hollywood.

This talk serves as a crossover kickoff event for two special series at PRS during the month of July: Yesterday LA and Places Wonderful & Strange!
Yesterday LA
This July, the Philosophical Research Society celebrates our beloved city’s rich and diverse past with YesterdayLA, a month-long exploration of unique stories and works of art that have become part of the fabric of Los Angeles history.
7th House and Cinemyth present: Places Wonderful and Strange: A Cinemyth Lecture Series on Lynch’s LA & the Mysteries of Twin Peaks
PRS returns to TWIN PEAKS! During the month of July, join PRS contributing artists, scholars, and special guests to walk into the mysteries of the woods and greet the esoteric ideas and images animating Twin Peaks’ mythogeography. William Kiesel, Devon Deimler, and Guadalupe Arellanes, of PRS’ esoteric Gotta Light? panel are back to present individual deep-dives into the series’ dreams and doubles, myths and symbols, hauntologies and spiritual philosophies.
Our series begins with a special crossover kickoff with PRS’s Yesterday LA series and Amanda Karkoutly’s exploration of David Lynch’s LA, and will conclude on July 22nd with a birthday celebration of Twin Peaks’ unfading muse, Laura Palmer. Every week, once a week in July, give yourself a present!
