A gathering to share knowledge about the relationships between different generations of womxn who have resisted Italian fascism and colonialism.
Alex Martinis Roe and Muna Mussie
This one-day workshop brings together screening, reading, and conversation to explore resistance as an intergenerational, kinship-based practice. The programme opens with a screening of Figlie by Alex Martinis Roe, framing reflections on how resistance is transmitted through familial, affective, and political lineages, followed by Muna Mussie’s presentation of Milite Ignoto, which engage questions of memory, absence, and counter-histories in the Italian context.
The day continues with a collective reading of Joyce Lussu, focusing on her transversal politics and their relevance to contemporary forms of resistance in Italy, including her engagement with Sardinian witchcraft as a radical feminist position. A shared reading from Timira: Romanzo meticcio concludes the programme, foregrounding Isabella Marincola’s lived struggle and the preservation of her brother’s memory as an enduring intergenerational practice of resistance, in dialogue with Angelica Pesarini’s writing on racial identity.

Alex Martinis Roe is an artist and researcher focussed on feminist genealogies, seeking to foster specific and productive relations between different generations as a way of participating in the construction of feminist histories and futures. This involves developing research and storytelling methodologies, which employ non-linear understandings of time, respond to the specific practices of different communities, experiment with the dispositives of discursive encounter, and imagine how these entanglements can inform new political practices.
Muna Mussie, is a multidisciplinary artist of Eritrean origin based in Bologna. Her work moves between gesture, vision and word, crossed by the practice of embroidery, and investigates the languages of the arts to give shape to the tension that arises between different expressive poles, private and public, memory and oblivion, visible and invisible.
