Dastaan-e-Jahanpanah: Tales of a Lost City & a 'Mad' Sultan!

It was 1327 CE when the Sultan of Dilli Sultan Mohammad Bin Tughlaq issued a 'Firmaan' (Royal Decree) which caught his people unawares...the recently fortified walls of a new city built by the Sultan in Dilli 'Jahanpanah' (Dilli's 4th city) was to be abandoned and the capital & its people were to move from Dilli to Maharashtra to another new capital city at Daulatabad!!!

A monumental folly matched only by the order for a reverse migration within 8 yrs when the capital was moved back to Delhi!!!

But this was just the beginning...after all it wasn't an accident that he was known as a "crazy, eccentric" or as we call him the "wise-fool" king!!

And while the people of the city toiled under its mad sultan their hope for salvation was 'Khwaja Hazrat Roshan Nasiruddin Chiragh-e-Dehlvi the "mureed" (Spiritual Successor/Disciple) of great Sufi Saint Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya and the last of the Chisti Sufi Saints who lived taught & met their maker in Delhi!

The fourth city of Delhi built 700 years ago reflects the brilliance of perhaps one of the most highly misunderstood and misrepresented historical personalities of India.

And like the (in)famous sultan the city lies buried in years of neglect and anonymity….its city walls have crumbled to dust and not many Dilliwallas can locate this city with it’s tales of grandeur and the fabled Hazaar Sutoon (thousand pillared hall)!

This Sunday morning we invite you for a jaunt to the amidst the dead ruins of the fort-city walls of Muhammad Bin Tughlaq.

A walk on architecture , tales of mad sultans & Sufi Pirs along with a visit to the 14th C Dargah-e-Chirag-e-Dehlvi which was part of the original city.
