Dash Jam is a short documentary series featuring the late, great filmmaker and musician Jaimz Asmundson, interviewing an incredible, diverse selection of prominent local Winnipeg musicians. Jaimz had the idea for this show while touring with his own band Ghost Twin, where long highway drives fuelled many deep, personal conversations. The setting is a mobile interview – driving around in Jaimz’s beloved Honda Civic and chatting with each musician about their life and music. Throughout each interview, a duo of portable synthesizers and drum machines courtesy of Roland Canada is featured, affixed to the car’s dashboard and hooked up to the car stereo, providing a live, improvised and fresh soundtrack played by the special guest.
Jaimz did the vast majority of the live shoots in the fall of 2019 (making it a period piece of sorts at this point!). He then began the grueling editing process to distill over 2 hours of live footage for each interview into a snappy 15 minute episode. He was well into completing 5 rough cuts, when March 2020 happened, and everything changed. He was suddenly working from home, on his editing computer, and trying to figure out how to operate a movie theatre when movie theatres were not allowed to be open. I think we all know how that story goes. The project languished, and Jaimz was unable to complete it prior to his untimely death in January 2024.
With Jaimz’s passing, this project was one of many that passed into the hands of his wife Karen. She decided that the project was too special to not let it go unfinished, and it also became a lifeline for her, a place to focus some of the messy emotional energy that comes with intense grief. She got in touch with Ryan Simmons, a friend who had worked on Dash Jam from the start, and with his help, put plans in place to get it finished. So much love has been poured into completing this series, including the help of many talented friends including Marc Greene (Editor), Craig Guiboche (Editor), Alison Hain (Post Sound), and Abby Falvo, who introduces each episode. Another important part of this journey for Karen was learning video editing through workshops at the Winnipeg Film Group as well as Film Training Manitoba’s Deep Dive mentorship program.
After 2 long years of devoted effort, Dash Jam is here for your viewing and listening pleasure. Sit back and enjoy this wealth of stories, jokes, insights and tunes from the streets of Winnipeg. (Karen Asmundson)
