OUR PRESENTER:
Dr. Jordi Casanova earned his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and is an assistant professor at Regis University. Previously, he has worked at North Carolina State University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a post-doctoral researcher. Here in Colorado, he has taught at the Colorado Community College System and at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. He is a theoretical astrophysicist interested in deciphering how stars explode and die.
PRESENTATION:
Recurrent novae are stellar explosions that occur in binary systems where a white dwarf accretes matter from a companion star at very high rates. The outburst occurs on a highly luminous and massive white dwarf, close to the Chandrasekhar limit. These cataclysmic stellar events have recurrence times of less than 100 years. T Coronae Borealis (commonly known as the Blaze Star) is a well-monitored recurrent nova with an eruption periodicity of approximately 80 years; its last outburst occurred in 1946. Astronomers predict that it may erupt again in the near future. In this talk, Dr. Casanova will summarize the current status of this unique system and discuss theoretical predictions regarding its behavior.
LOCATION:
In-person at the Secular Hub (254 N. Knox Ct., Denver, CO 80219).
Date/time: Monday, September 8th , 7:00 p.m.; meeting attendees can arrive at Seculatr Hub starting at 6:30 p.m.
