Formed in Detroit, MI in 2017, VAZUM is an alternative rock band known for their dark, introspective sound and captivating performances. Consisting of Zach Pliska and Emily Sturm, VAZUM draws inspiration from a diverse range of influences including post-punk, gothic rock and shoegaze. Their music explores themes of mental health, isolation, and the human condition, creating a haunting yet cathartic experience for listeners. With a dynamic blend of moody melodies, atmospheric guitars, and ethereal vocals, VAZUM has garnered a dedicated international following, establishing themselves as a prominent force in the underground music scene.
Taking the name from a genus of predatory sea snails called Vasum, Zach Pliska launched VAZUM in 2017 with the release of the single Fall Guy. Previously a drummer for various Detroit bands, Zach had extensive experience performing, writing and producing. From 2018 to 2019 Zach released three VAZUM albums and played regionally as he honed the sound. In 2020, Zach fatefully partnered with the multi-talented vocalist, bassist and visual artist Emily Sturm and began the next chapter of VAZUM as a duo. Since 2020, Zach and Emily have since released six albums, two EP's and various singles and music videos. They have expanded from regional to international shows with tours in the UK and France. Their most recent album, Western Violence, has proven VAZUM to be a premier modern goth rock act, with glowing reviews from reputable writers such as Mick Mercer. VAZUM are fiercely independent and operate with a DIY ethos. VAZUM are currently recording their next album, Pretty Brutal in their church studio in Jackson, Michigan.
