About this Event
Open for both adults and children aged 6 years and older. Prizes awarded in the open (adult), Under 18, Under 15, Under 12 and Under 9 categories.
The tournament will be rated by the ACF (Australian Chess Federation) in its June 2026 list. Previously unrated participants will be able to join the ACF rating list for rapid and blitz chess by playing in the event with no additional fee. Please note that the ACF requires date of birth and gender to be provided for each player for identification purposes.
The tournament is open to residents and non-residents of Darebin City Council. Non-members welcome.
Entry cost:
- Adult: $25 (inclusive of all Eventbrite booking fees and GST)
- Concession/Student/Child: $20 (inclusive of all Eventbrite booking fees and GST)
If you prefer to pay cash, please see us at one of our weekly events on Mondays and Fridays in the Preston Library before registering. Cash rate is $20 for Adults and $15 Concession.
This is one of our two large biannual tournaments for 2026 with 48 participants. (We also hold smaller monthly allegro tournaments at other times during the year).
8 places in the tournament will be reserved until Wednesday 20th May for female entrants. If by that date there have not been at least 8 entries from female players, then the unused places will then be released to players on the waiting list.
The Open and Under 18 divisions will both have cash prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place. The Junior division (Under 12) division will have trophies and medals. There will also be medals for the best Under 15 and Under 9. The following prizes will be awarded:
- Open Division:
- - Winner: $90
- - 2nd Place: $70
- - 3rd Place: $50
- Under 18 (born in 2008 or later):
- - Best U18: $50
- - 2nd U18: $30
- - 3rd U18: $20
- Under 15 (born in 2011 or later): Medal
- Under 12 (born in 2014 or later):
- - Best U12: Trophy
- - 2nd U12: Medal
- - 3rd U12: Medal
- Under 9 (born in 2017 or later): Medal
Only one prize can be won per player and the precedence order will be according to value.
We expect that all children 12 years old and below will be accompanied by at least one adult who must remain at the venue for the entire tournament.
This tournament is not intended for beginners. If you are unsure whether your child has the skill level appropriate for the tournament, please drop in to see us at our free Monday chess club at the Preston Library 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Beginners are welcome at these free Monday chess club events.
If you register for this tournament but later become unwell or no longer wish to attend for any reason, please cancel your registration or send an email to us so that we can release the ticket to those on our waitlist and refund your entry fee. (We can only refund our component of the entry fee. We cannot refund the Eventbrite booking fee).
As a courtesy to the other participants, please ensure that you are at the venue promptly at the 1:00pm starting time. You must be able to stay for the entire duration of the tournament (ending no later than 5:00pm). All participants will participate in all seven rounds. (This is not a knock-out style tournament.) Time limits will apply for all games (10 minutes, plus 2 second increment).
By participating in this Chess Tournament, you consent that your photograph may be taken at this event by the organizer and used by Darebin Chess Club Inc. or Darebin Council in promotional materials, including the publication of names of winners in each category.
