About this Event
DARBAR-E-PADABALI
The Bengali kirtan is that milestone of Indian music, whose musical element, language, philosophy, and aesthetic application– all belong to a refined class of elitism. In contemporary times, it has been observed that due to inadequate preservation and lack of practice among the populace, this grandiose resource is gradually losing its esteem. An exemplary initiative ‘Darbar-e Padabali’, is taken to make the clock reverse and bring back the lost glory of this archaic high-note Kirtan tradition. The Geet Govinda, composed and performed by the medieval poet Jayadev at the court of King Lakshmana Sena from the middle age was originally based on the melody and structure of the ancient Raga-Ragini, and the rhythms used in various hymns are taken from the Gandharva music. The music that resumed its journey from the court took shelter in the mathh and temples during the foreign invasion retaliation. Again that music made its return by coming down the path and becoming the confidante of the ‘Apamar Bangali’ (fellow Bengalis) during Chaitanyadev’s propagation of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Gradually, the Kirtan of Bengal developed and evolved in various genres and became a part of the Bengali Society. However, if we look back at those glorious days, we cannot trace the nobility of the Kirtan tradition. Except in certain areas, since the nineteenth century, the Kirtan tradition has gradually turned into a subject of bane among a specific class of listeners. The sole purpose and initiative of ‘Darbar-e Padabali’ is to remove this misconception. The internationally renowned Pandit Shyam Sundar Goswami and his disciple Smt. Debalina Ghosh has dedicated their life to researching this subject and is poised to reveal its essence at this event. This unique offering of the guru-shishya (master and disciple) will be composed before the audience of Bengal.
It is our honour to inform you that the renowned vocalist, Pandit Shyam Sundar Goswami along with his disciple Debalina is going to perform first time together in the concert 'Darbar-e Padabali' on the 19.01.24, Birla Academy, near Lake Kali Bari.
