Julio Ruiz was born in Almería in 1993 and studied Flamenco Dance at the CPDA "Kina Jiménez" and Spanish Dance at the CAD. At the same time, he trained with artists such as Antonio Canales, Daniel Doña, Eva Yerbabuena, Rubén Olmo, Manolete, Farruquito, Manuel Liñán, Olga Pericet, Marco Flores and Pastora Galván.
At only 19 years old he was the winner of the V Certamen Andaluz de Jóvenes Flamencos DESENCAJA 2014 organized by the IAJ and the Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco de la Junta de Andalucía. He was also awarded 1st prize II Concurso de Jóvenes Flamencos, organised by the Federación de Peñas Flamencas de Málaga 2016.
Awards
Outstanding Dancer Award at the 26th Choreography Contest of Spanish Dance and Flamenco in Madrid, 2017.
Audience Award in the 5th Certamen Coreográfico Distrito de Tetuán with the choreography ''Sitio donde te hablé '' under the stage direction of Guadalupe Torres, 2018.
Scholarship with Resident Company Daniel Doña, within the contest of Spanish Dance and Flamenco of the District Tetuán, Madrid, which produced the show '' VIS a VIS '', choreographed and directed by Daniel Doña, 2015.
Daniel Doña Resident Company for the second time, 2018. - 2nd prize in the V Concurso de Danza Española y Baile Flamenco de Almería 2017.
He has toured nationally and internationally (USA, Brazil, Hungary) as a solo dancer and has participated in important festivals such as the Festival de Jerez, under the direction of Fuensanta La Moneta and the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla.
He was part of the cast of the company La Fura dels Baus for the show Amor Brujo, in the role of Carmelo, alongside Esperanza Fernández, Marina Heredia, El Bolita and Miguel Ángel Cortés.
Despite his youth, he has already premiered several shows: "Retazos" in 2014, "Sitio donde te hablé" in 2017, "1993" under the direction of Daniel Doña and with the special collaboration of Rubén Olmo as guest choreographer in 2019 and "Bula" in 2020, a choreographic piece created for non-conventional spaces, in which Daniel Doña directs. The pre-release of “Bula” took place in November 2019 in Almería, with the support of the Instituto Andaluz de la Juventud and its premiere in November 2020 in Centro Cultural Eduardo Úrculo in Madrid.
Julio has toured with his shows "1993", "Bula" and "Azul como la piel del melocotón", and "Tocar un Hombre". He brought the premiere of ‘ENEA’ to Liverpool in October 2021, a traditional recital of flamenco based on the cante that has inspired his dance and guided his artistic development. He also brought an adaptation of “Retazos” to Manchester, another more traditional recital with a retrospective view of fragments of the flamenco that has formed his life and his art.
Recent works include "Tocar un Hombre" which was presented at the Sadlers Wells flamenco festival in 2023 and "Un diálogo entre Paula Comitre y Julio Ruiz". Julio is currently touring with his show "La Familia", which was a great success at the International Festival of Jerez in March 2026.
