Hosted by Roxxanne Shelaby, Arab dance performer, educator, and creator of "The Fez Documentary".
About Esraa Warda:
Esraa Warda is a prominent Algerian-American dance performer and educator based in New York, specializing in traditional and popular Algerian dance forms like Raï, Chaoui, and Assimi. Her work operates from a decolonial indigenous body knowledge, sexuality, and North African feminism(s) framework. Warda's teaching pedagogy blends traditional embodied formats and community-based learning with a systematic approach to Algerian dance vocabulary. In 2024, you can find Warda on television on a PBS episode of Bare Feet by Michela Malozzi speaking about the movement and history of Algerian Rai dance or performing on NPR’s Tiny Desk with Bnat el Houariyat, an all women’s band from Marrakech. 10:00-12:00pm - Algerian Rai Dance Workshop $50
Join Esraa Warda, an Algerian-American dance artist, for a workshop on Raï, Algeria's "rebel blues." Discover the origins and evolution of this music genre, emblematic of subversiveness in Algeria and the diaspora. Exploring themes of exile, love, and loss, Raï sheds light on marginalized North Africans' dilemmas and personal expressions. Participants will learn fundamental movements, rhythms, and the unique "groove" of Raï dance.
12:15-2:15pm - Algerian Chaoui Dance Workshop $50
This workshop will explore a traditional dance from one sub-group of the indigenous people (Amazigh) of North Africa, known as the Chaouiya. This group is home to the region of the Aures mountains in East Algeria. Chaoui dance is maternal and grounded, truly symbolic of this tribe's respect for the divine energy of nature and agriculture. Famously known for the "bounce" of the belly, this style is danced with strong isolations in the pelvis area.
