NlPerformancekunstenaar Dana Michel beschouwt zwemmen als een belichaming van zelfvertrouwen en vraagt zich af waarom ze zich, ondanks vele jaren zwemles, nog steeds niet echt op haar gemak voelt in het water. En wat weerhoudt het grootste deel van haar familie ervan om te zwemmen, terwijl ze afkomstig zijn van een eiland omringd door zowel de Atlantische Oceaan als de Caribische Zee? Hoe veilig kan je je voelen in de wereld als je niet kan drijven in de vloeistof waaruit een groot deel van je lichaam bestaat? Met YOU CANNOT CAN creëert Michel een nieuwe soloperformance in een zwembad. Omringd door het publiek waadt ze door de historische en socio-economische realiteiten van zwemmen en veilige toegang tot water. Na MIKE (Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2023), waarin ze zelfvertrouwen op de werkvloer onderzocht, richt ze zich nu met haar kenmerkende caleidoscopische blik en nieuwsgierigheid op de vraag hoe we onze angsten kunnen overwinnen. De voorstelling vindt plaats in de Baden van Brussel, een stukje erfgoed in het hart van de Marollen, met twee boven elkaar gelegen zwembaden en grote glaspartijen die uitkijken over de stad. Kan dit wateravontuur een opstap zijn naar ultieme bevrijding?

Pour l’artiste performeuse Dana Michel, la capacité de nager est l’une des façons qui nous permettent d’atteindre la confiance en soi. Pourtant, malgré ses multiples tentatives pour apprendre à nager, elle ne se sent toujours pas à l’aise dans l’eau. Pourquoi ce blocage persiste-t-il chez elle, mais aussi chez la majeure partie de sa famille, bien qu’iels soient originaires d’une île entourée par l’Atlantique et la mer des Caraïbes ? Comment se sentir en sécurité dans ce monde sans parvenir à flotter dans l’élément qui compose la majorité de son propre corps ? Avec sa nouvelle performance solo YOU CANNOT CAN, Dana Michel investit l’espace d’une piscine. Entourée du public, elle se plonge dans des récits et réalités socioéconomiques mondiaux liés au fait de nager et à l’accès à l’eau. Après avoir exploré la confiance en soi sur le lieu de travail avec MIKE (Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2023), elle déploie aujourd’hui son approche kaléidoscopique et sa curiosité pour interroger la façon de se débarrasser de ses peurs. La performance se déroule dans les Bains de Bruxelles, patrimoine niché au cœur des Marolles, avec ses différents bassins et une vue sur la ville à travers sa façade vitrée. Cette aventure aquatique se révèlera-t-elle être une clé vers la libération ultime ?

Performance artist Dana Michel considers the ability to swim to be one of the ways in which we might embody self-trust and wonders why, despite many attempts at learning, she still cannot really feel at ease in the water. And what is it that holds back the majority of her family from swimming, despite hailing from an island that is surrounded by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea? How safe can you feel in the world if you cannot float in the liquid that makes up a large part of your body? With YOU CANNOT CAN, Michel creates a new solo performance in a swimming pool. Surrounded by the audience, she wades inside global histories and socio-economic realities of swimming and safe access to water. After MIKE (Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2023), in which she explored self-trust in the workplace, she now uses her signature kaleidoscopically-curious approach to focus on how we might approach shaking off fears. The performance takes place in the heritage-listed Bains de Bruxelles, in the heart of the Marollen, with its superimposed pools and offering a view towards the city through its glazed facade. Might this watery adventure be an entry point to ultimate liberation?
