Dan Haywood Band // Alex Rex // Harvey LordMay 8th ; a spring summit of three of the most singular writer-performers in the acid folk / outsider / and freak-confessional spheres.
An Alex Rex guitar and vocal set at Kanteena will form part of a 2026 tour promoting Alex Neilson’s sixth solo album, ‘Alexander the Destroyer’. Neilson’s 20-year career continues to be a fascinating exploration of the links between British folk music, US rock and the international avant-garde, as evidenced by his work with both Will Oldham and Bonnie ‘Prince Billy’ (jj!), Shirley Collins, Jandek, Mike Heron of the Incredible String Band, Isobel Campbell, Six Organs of Admittance, Richard Youngs and Current 93. Alongside Lavinia Blackwall he founded the folk-rocking Trembling Bells which released eight much-loved LPs between 2009 and 2019, and toured the world and elsewhere from 2007. Alex is also a noted ‘free’ drummer, having founded wild genre-defying acts Directing Hand and Death Shanties, sticks and mallets in hand.
Haywood will play with a stellar band featuring Paddy Steer (lap steel gtr), Matt Canty (dbl bass), Andy Raven and more, extemporising on 30 years of his highly original, lyrically-progressive material. He is best known for his cultish 32-song 3LP suite ‘Dan Haywood’s New Hawks’ and has recorded and toured with American originals Josephine Foster and the late, great Michael Hurley, also opening for larger acts across Europe which Dan describes as ‘too safe to namecheck’. His other albums include those from his decade of fronting the fuzz-rocking Pill Fangs and his Wire-endorsed, Cafe Oto released 52-minute ‘Country Dustbin’. This set is likely to draw on his folkier repertoire including his new ‘Ten Signs’ joint album, ‘New Hawks’ and ‘Dapple’, which prompted Record Collector to dub Dan ‘the greatest songwriter you’ve probably never heard of’!
Yet more obscure (!) and just as beguiling is opener Harvey Lord. This is a rare opportunity to catch the ‘Westmorland Zen’ of his song-craft, heard most widely on his large ensemble long-player ‘The Existence of Harvey Lord’. Deceptively gentle, and often framing stony truths within a soft but vivid psychedelia, this char fishing fell runner, firefighter and family man’s music must not be missed.
The artists are pleased to be collaborating with Kanteena’s sound and lighting crew to create a trippy vernal ambience for this partially-seated night featuring field recordings of bird sounds collected in Lancashire and Dumfries and Galloway by DJ Sibilatrix.
This gig will be in Atika and has reduced accessibility mainly due to stairs. Please contact us for more info on this
The outside beer garden will be open from 16h
