Understanding how the body moves can transform the way we practice. This workshop explores the foundations of movement through the lens of kinesiology—the scientific study of human motion—and biomechanics, which examines how forces, joints, and tissues interact to create movement. Together, these fields help us understand how muscles, bones, and the nervous system coordinate to produce efficient, adaptable motion.
As yoga practitioners, developing this awareness allows us to approach asana with greater clarity, safety, and intention. Rather than striving for a particular shape, we begin to focus on the function of each posture—how joints articulate, how muscles generate and control force, and how individual structure influences range of motion.
In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of functional anatomy and movement mechanics, and how to apply them directly to your practice. We’ll explore how differences in bone structure, mobility, strength, and experience naturally create variation in asana—and why that variation is not only normal, but essential.
Through a “form follows function” approach, you’ll gain tools to move with more ease, resilience, and confidence—supporting a practice that is both sustainable and deeply your own.
