About this Event

Join the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for a free tour of Dover (St James) Cemetery, led by one of our experienced tour guides.

Our tours are free to the public, but if you would like to support us then please consider donating to our charity The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF).

https://foundation.cwgc.org/donate/

MEETING POINT is inside entrance gates (Old Charlton Road).

Caution: There are three other cemeteries in close proximity- Jewish, Charlton and St. Mary's, all with the same address. St. James's is furthest from the town end of Old Charlton Road and is on right side.

Dover (St James's) Cemetery sadly reflects the importance of the Port of Dover during both World Wars, containing as it does more than 750 graves of British, Commonwealth and foreign casualties. Your guide will tell you about the history and current work of the CWGC and will recount some of the stories of those who rest here. In particular, you will see the two major plots, dedicated to the casualties of the 1918 Zeebrugge Raid and 1940 Dunkirk Evacuation.

The tours will last approx. 60 mins and covers about 800 metres on paths and grass with rough and uneven ground, and some of the site is on a steep hillside. Wheelchair access is only possible for part of the tour.

There is parking available on-site and there are no facilities or toilets on site, so please bring water if required.

Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.

Only assistance dogs allowed in the cemetery.

Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.

The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.

The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1171947) and Scotland (SC051982).
