MEETING POINT is at the car park gate.
Cadder Cemetery is situated on the Northeast corner of Glasgow. It is not large but has impressive views of the Campsie Hills. It is not close to any large-scale military locations. There was RAF Bishopbriggs which opened in 1939 as a barrage balloon base there was also a large transit camp located in the area now built over by HMP Lowmoss.
Bishopbriggs itself was far enough out of Glasgow at the time of WW2 that the blitz other than on one notable occasion passed it by. This in itself is what makes Cadder Cemetery interesting as the people commemorated there are mainly from the surrounding area. People who are connected to the area and still have familial connections to the area. This is the focus of this tour, local people who did extraordinary things. There are no commemorations to highly decorated or notable figures just real people. The very ones that our founding principles are dedicated to remembering. There is one group commemorated here who do remind us of our wider duty in the crew of an aircraft which crashed whilst on a training flight killing the entire crew of young Canadians.
The tour lasts approx. 60 mins and covers about 1000 metres on paths and grass with uneven ground.
Parking is available on site. There are no on-site facilities and toilets. Please bring water if required.
Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.
Well behaved dogs are allowed in the cemetery.
Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.
The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.
