MEETING POINT at the Cross of Sacrifice at the cemetery entrance.
The tour of Moorgate Cemetery with 85 Commonwealth War Graves is synonymous with South Yorkshire’s industrial heritage. There are spectacular views over the South Yorkshire Industrial heartland of Rotherham & Sheffield, spreading over towards Derbyshire peak district and overshadowed by Wincobank Hill. Once a Roman Fortress and latterly bristling with Anti-Aircraft Batteries during WWII, protecting pivotal specialised steel armament factories producing numerous military items such as engine parts for the Merlin engine, to Sir Barnes Wallis 22,000 lb Grand Slam bomb. Opposite Moorgate Cemetery is Thomas Rotherham College formerly Rotherham Grammar School. Tour visitors follow the emotional journey of some of the young academics who once walked through the gates of the school and went on to serve with inspirational distinction, performing heroic deeds and sacrificing their young lives only to return to Moorgate Cemetery and be commemorated by the CWGC.
The tour lasts approx. 90 mins and covers about 800 metres on paths and grass with uneven ground.
Parking is available nearby. There are no facilities or toilets on site. Please bring water if required.
Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.
Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in the cemetery.
Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.
The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.
