About this Event
Title: Cuts and Counsel
Summary:
Cuts and Counsel is an immersive art installation honoring the barbershop as one of the most vital, enduring institutions within Black community life.
More than a place for grooming, the barbershop has long functioned as a site of trust, dialogue, mentorship, and cultural authorship. It is where stories are passed down, identities are shaped, and truths are spoken freely—without translation or permission.
This installation transforms space into memory: the hum of clippers, the cadence of conversation, the weight of a chair that has held generations. Cuts and Counsel invites guests into a living archive of lived experience—where every cut carries counsel, and every voice leaves an imprint.
Inspired by the narrative gravity of Derrick Bell and the sensory intentionality of Vin En Noir, the experience asks guests not only to witness, but to listen.
Because in these chairs, history isn’t recorded.
It’s spoken.
It’s challenged.
It’s preserved.
This is not nostalgia.
This is infrastructure.
