About this Event

Gain an exclusive, behind‑the‑scenes insight into how a major art exhibition is brought to life. Join Tim Martin, Curator of ‘A Life in Art: Roger Fry’, for a rare opportunity to explore the creative, historical, and curatorial decisions that shaped the exhibition.

What to Expect

The talk begins with a welcoming cup of tea in the elegant surroundings of Castle House, followed by a 30‑minute illustrated talk in which Tim shares the fascinating process of developing a major exhibition—from initial research to the final installation.

Discover:

  • What motivates an artist like Roger Fry at a particular moment in history
  • How family descendants and private archives can transform our understanding of an artist’s work
  • Why Fry’s ideas and experiences still resonate today, offering striking parallels with contemporary issues

Following the talk, enjoy a personal tour of the exhibition with Tim as your guide—an invaluable chance to explore artworks and ideas with the curator who knows them best.

About the Exhibition

‘A Life in Art: Roger Fry’ is on display at The Museum of Somerset until 4 July. Coming directly from Charleston, Sussex, the former home of the Bloomsbury Group, this remarkable exhibition brings together:

  • Over 40 vibrant artworks by Roger Fry
  • Exceptional loans and rarely-seen pieces from private collections
  • A special opportunity to view works by Helen Coombe (1864–1937), Fry’s wife, whose art is seldom publicly exhibited
