CUNY/UA Disciplinary Literacy in Science Professional Learning #3

Welcome, CUNY/UA science teachers! We look forward to a fruitful day of learning with you on Tuesday, December 2. Our objectives:

1. Grounded in updated data, review text engineering principles and engineer texts from Unit 3 of biology and Earth and space science respectively
   
2. Differentiate between activating and building background knowledge, and plan to do both within science lessons
   
3. Leverage background knowledge to spark and drive discussion throughout a science lesson (same lessons as earlier)
   
4. Explore the research behind the Talk-Read-Talk-Write strategy in order to pair it with a New Visions science thinking routine
   
5. Activate background knowledge and text engineer a new piece of writing, Neil de Grasse Tyson’s “The Cosmic Perspective”
