About this Event
Welcome to the Cultural Humility Two Day Workshop happening at Saint Mary's Maqiyahtimok Centre on September 16, 2025 at 9:00 AM (Atlantic Time)! Join us for an enriching experience where we'll explore the importance of cultural humility in our interactions and relationships. Learn how to embrace diversity, foster inclusivity, and build meaningful connections with others. Cultural humility looks inward. This workshop offers a space for reflection, dialogue, and growth. Come ready to engage, listen, and learn from one another. Don't miss out on this opportunity to grow personally and professionally. See you there!
This workshop is based upon the concept of cultural humility and its principles developed by Dr. Melanie Tervalon and Dr. Jann Murray-Garcia. Day one focuses on providing essential concepts and practices that encourage a safe respectful space. Day two will focus upon understanding and practicing the principles of cultural humility through small groups with dialogue.
Dr. Jann Murray-García has led community-based education and cultural understanding at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing since its launch in 2010 and asserts that individuals and institutions must look for their hidden scripts. That those scripts are the cultural identities, family experiences, traumas, intersecting histories, and languages that shape interactions, inform values and influence policies. She professes that scripts can be interrupted by using cultural humility.
This workshop will share literature, videos, experiences, as well as engage in dialogue, self-reflection and experiential learning to foster knowledge and insight towards:
· How communication styles matter.
· How implicit bias and hidden scripts impact service delivery and work environments.
· How the practice of cultural humility can cultivate cultural safety.
· How cultural humility encourages awareness of power dynamics.
· How cultural humility encourages respect towards culture, identity, and a person's needs and rights.
· The difference between cultural humility and cultural competency.
· The connection between cultural humility and a safe and healthy work culture.
· The importance of community and institutional accountability towards Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity, and Belonging Initiatives.
