About this Event
Join us for Cultural & Innovative Fridays at the Consulate-General of Japan in Boston, featuring a special program on Nihonga, or "Japanese painting".
This session will be aimed at introducing Nihonga — commonly (and somewhat confusingly) translated as “Japanese Painting” — as an art genre to those who have little or no knowledge on the subject. We will briefly dive into the history of painting in Japan, the events that led up to the coining of the phrase “Nihonga” during the Meiji period, the fascinating connection it has with Boston, and the state of modern Nihonga painting.
