John McCabe (Warren Beatty), a small-time gambler who sets up a brothel in a developing 1900s Washington mining town. He partners with Mrs. Miller (Julie Christie), a savvy, opium-smoking madam who turns his struggling venture into a huge success. The pair faces destruction when a large mining company attempts to buy them out, leading to a tragic showdown.
