CROYDON MOSS CLUB! No.4

Croydon is one of London's richest boroughs for bryophytes (mosses and liverworts), and we want everyone to know!

These inconspicuous and often overlooked plants may be tiny, but they play a big part in our local ecology. Walk amongst ancient woodlands, heaths, wetlands, and chalk grasslands, and meet some of the species which make Croydon so special.

Learn to identify common species, what makes bryophytes different from other plants, and what part they play in Croydon's unique ecology.

409 or 411 bus from Purley or Croydon

Please wear sturdy footwear and warm clothes. Feel free to bring water, snacks, and a flask of tea! If you have a hand lens or magnifying glass, you can bring those too, but we'll have some to share if not.

As this walk starts at 1 pm and is a few hours long, please have lunch early if possible. Selsdon Woods is a large area, and there is no cafe or shop on site for refreshments/facilities.

Becky has been studying bryology in her spare time since 2024 and is currently preparing for a Master's in Ecology. She is a member of the British Bryological Society and frequently joins regional group outings - most notably the London Bryophyte Group. Growing up in South Croydon with Happy Valley on her doorstep, Becky's personal connection to the area adds another unique layer to these walks.
