Crematory wurde 1991 in Mannheim gegründet und entwickelte sich schnell zu einer der wegweisenden Kräfte Europas im Bereich Gothic und Dark Metal. Ihre frühen Alben wie Transmigration (1993) und …Just Dreaming (1994) etablierten eine einzigartige Mischung aus schweren Riffs, melodischen Keyboards und düsteren Atmosphären. Mit Illusions (1995) – dem Album, auf dem ihr späterer Klassiker „Tears of Time“ zu finden ist – und dem Nachfolger Awake (1997) bauten sie sich weltweit eine starke Fangemeinde auf. Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte entwickelte sich Crematory weiter: In den 2000er und 2010er Jahren integrierten sie mehr elektronische und düstere Elemente, behielten aber ihre Heavy-Goth-Metal-Wurzeln bei. Alben wie Act Seven (1998), Believe (2000), Revolution (2004), Pray (2008), Antiserum (2014) oder Monument (2016) zeigen diese stilistische Weiterentwicklung. Mit Inglorious Darkness (2022) nahm die Band sogar ihren Signature-Song „Tears of Time” unter dem deutschen Titel „Tränen der Zeit” neu auf – eine Verbeugung vor den Fans und eine Würdigung ihrer langen Karriere. With Illusions (1995) — the record that featured their future classic “Tears of Time” — and the follow-up Awake (1997), they built a strong fan base worldwide. Over the decades, Crematory evolved: In the 2000s and 2010s they incorporated more electronic and dark elements while still keeping their heavy Goth-metal roots.
