About this Event

The Swoboda Research Centre welcomes its members and anyone interested in the future of credit unions to participate in Making collaboration work, a conference in Dublin on 24th May 2024.

The case for credit union collaboration has been made frequently and persuasively in recent years, not least by Swoboda, starting in 2017 with our paper examining the Irish credit union business model. It seems fair to say that the principle has been accepted – there are not many credit unionists who believe that the future lies in individual credit unions pursuing entirely discrete and separate business and operational models and strategies. Most are aware of the examples of success in North America and Australia and accept that there is value – potentially even necessity – in working together, and there are high profile examples now of effective projects, such as the current accounts and mortgages CUSOs (Credit Union Service Organisations) in Ireland and the Greater Manchester Consortium (initiated for advocacy but expanding its scope to marketing and products) in England, and there are new ideas being discussed around the sector.

We are now confronted by two key challenges: how to make these and other such projects successful and sustainable, and where collaboration should focus next. Movements in both countries have ‘had their fingers burned in the past’; now is the time to build trust and take decisions. This conference will seek to address these questions through a mix of presentation and participation, so delegates can listen, learn and debate.

Swoboda is grateful to its corporate members for their support for this conference: , , , , , and .
