Join us for a rare opportunity to learn about the techniques of manuscript illumination - the art of painting with gold. As part of our 'Beyond The Page: South Asian Miniature Painting and Britain, 1600 to Now' event programme, join us for a creative workshop inspired by South Asian miniature painting lead by an expert in manuscript illumination.
This workshop is open to everyone regardless of experience and is suitable for anyone age 14 and over. We're also running a workshop in the morning called, 'Decorate Your Own Frame'.
Learn from a master painter to understand and practice the foundational techniques for manuscript illumination used in South Asian miniature painting. This three-hour workshop offers a series of exercises which centres on the art of the line in illumination. Starting with pencil, we will learn to steady the hand and create fluid lines with a range of weights - skills essential for an illuminator. We will move on to using a brush and ink to create motifs. The workshop will culminate in painting motifs using the 'halkar' method, a form of ornamentation featuring floral motifs painted in washes of dissolved gold.
This workshop is being delivered by traditional artist Unaiza Karim on behalf of the Museum of Islamic Arts & Heritage (MIAH) Foundation. Unaiza Karim is an award-winning artist and qualified teacher. She holds a Masters degree in Visual, Islamic and Traditional Arts from the Prince’s School of Traditional Art, London and specialises in the Art of Illumination. The MIAH Foundation is a charitable organisation established in 2020 that promotes awareness and understanding of the history, arts, culture and heritage of the Islamic world, as well as the history of Muslims in Britain and Europe through exhibitions, education, workshops and events.
All materials will be provided.
