Highlights how communities come together across social divides to share knowledge, create cultural value and unlock wider civic activism
About this Event

Launch event | Saturday 17th January 3-5pm Join us for the opening of the Creative Voices, Activist Voices exhibition at the Greener and Cleaner Hub where you can meet the research team, take part in some creative activities, and express your own call for justice. Free refreshments.

The opening event will include some drop-in creative activities designed for people of all ages to take part:

  • Placard Making – share something you would like to see change, an issue local to you, or inspired by the exhibition.
  • Little Pockets of Resistance – print an image or a promise that promotes positive action. These thoughtful mementoes will be added to a growing textile archive offering a gentle reminder of the small steps that lead to bigger change.

This exhibition presents findings from a research project funded by the Collaborate Fund (Centre for Cultural Value), and exhibition tour funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), jointly led by Fun Palaces and sociologist Dr Katy Pilcher from Aston University. Together they addressed the question:

To what extent can finding your creative voice unlock your wider civic activist voice, and what might be the potential barriers or social inequalities preventing this from happening?

The project highlights how communities come together across social divides to share knowledge, create cultural value and unlock wider civic activism.

Creative Voices, Activist Voices includes stories, photographs and objects shared by participants and items ranging from a cookbook to bubble-making activities, bringing to life the experiences of Fun Palaces Makers from across the UK.

Participants featured in the exhibition reflected on the impact of their involvement in Fun Palace events:

“[We] were inspired to challenge policies in the town.”

“[I have] built relationships in the community and [it] has inspired more working together for common goals.”

Feedback from the exhibition:

“ it has made me feel that the inclusion of seemingly incidental objects could spark huge creativity”

“Things can be fun, more playful whilst still holding significant meaning”

We regularly take photographs at our events to support us explaining what we do, and keep our funders informed. If for any reason you would prefer not to have your image included, please discuss this on arrival with the event leader
