Description
This two-day creative mug workshop focuses on wheel-thrown mugs with an emphasis on organic form, altering techniques, trimming, and handle construction. Students will create multiple mugs while exploring how proportion, surface texture, and subtle distortion can transform a simple cylinder into a dynamic, expressive form.
Participants will learn to pull and attach their own handles and experiment with specialty design techniques such as sodium silicate texture, faceting, rim alteration, and optional darting. At the end of the workshop, each student will select two favorite mugs to be glazed and fired.
This class is beginner-friendly; however, basic familiarity with centering, opening, and pulling a cylinder is helpful. Students who have taken an introductory wheel class will feel especially comfortable.
About the Instructor
Art has been a central part of Lorena’s life, with a deep-rooted passion for ceramics and painting that began in childhood. Growing up on a ranch along the Rio Grande River, she first experimented with natural clay collected from her family's ranch, as well as painting with pigments derived from native fruits and plants. These early explorations fostered a deep appreciation for natural materials and organic forms. As she continued developing her artistic practice, she began working with acrylic paint and later developed a strong affinity for oil painting. These formative experiences continue to shape the meaning and inspiration behind her current work.
