Heart Notans: Balance & Contrast in PaperIn this workshop, we’ll revisit the Japanese design concept of Notan, the art of balancing positive and negative space through light and dark shapes. Traditionally created by cutting and rearranging paper, Notan emphasizes harmony, contrast, and careful composition.
Similar to our Notan workshops from Fall 2025, participants will create bold, graphic designs—but this time we’ll begin with heart shapes instead of squares, allowing for playful symmetry and unexpected results. By cutting, flipping, and reassembling paper, you’ll explore how simple shapes can create dynamic visual balance.
This workshop is suitable for all experience levels and encourages thoughtful making, experimentation, and design-focused play.
