Join us for an enriching cultural and artistic journey in this three-session workshop series led by renowned book artist Sushmita Mazumdar. Explore diverse bookmaking techniques inspired by traditions from the Himalayas, Africa, and Japan, and learn to craft three unique handmade books. Whether you're an artist, writer, or simply curious, this workshop offers a chance to unlock your creativity and transform personal stories into beautiful art. Registration required. *Your registration is a commitment to a 3-week cohort with sessions on Mondays May 4, 11, and 18 from 2:30-4pm.
Instructor Sushmita Mazumdar is an Arlington, VA, based artist and educator. She has designed and created the Family Memory Storybooks project for the Smithsonian Institution and was featured in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s Asian American program, Global Lives Local Ties, in 2010. Her work has been at DC Public Library, Alexandria City Public Schools, Arlington Arts, The Building Museum, Kennedy Center, and the Richmond Folk Festival. She launched Handmade Storybooks in 2007 and in 2013 she opened Studio PAUSE, a multicultural community space for art and stories in Arlington, VA. In 2018 she won Arlington’s Woman of Vision award and in 2019 was sworn in as an arts commissioner for the VCA.
In 2020, she was featured in an Arlington Public Library exhibit, Women’s Work: Then & Now which showcased the work of some of Arlington’s women over the last 100 years
