About this Event

Join us in Redwood City, CA on Saturday February 28 from 1-4pm for a special in-person program (Zoom not available) at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Redwood City (street parking available) about creation care, or protecting our planet in answer to God's directive. Our guest speaker will be the esteemed Rev. Jim Antal, national spokesperson on climate change and Special Advisor on Climate with the United Church of Christ (UCC). He will explain why people of faith must take on the moral challenge of addressing climate change and how to do it. Rev. Antal is a denominational leader, award-winning activist, public theologian and author. In the words of the late Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; "Jim Antal shows how the church can engage the urgent moral crisis of climate change. His book, Climate Church, Climate World, will inspire both the courage and conviction people of faith need to provide the leadership necessary to realize God's dream of a just world in which humanity is reconciled to all of creation."

Rev. Antal's ideas are based in faith and informed by science. He suggests people of faith accept a new role, that of ensuring the continuity of creation. He'll explain how the climate crisis has worsened, how faith groups have fostered social movements throughout history, how we can apply values to protect creation and how to empower people of faith to act.

After his talk, Rev. Antal will be interviewed by a local pastor and answer questions from the audience. Gary H. White, award-winning Bay Area creation care leader, will join the interview to describe how his local Environmental Justice team has successfully implemented many of Rev. Antal's ideas. Finally, attendees will choose a small group in which to discuss existing climate change solutions facilitated by leaders of local climate groups. Discussions will focus on activating youth climate activism, influencing legislation for creation care, greening place of worship facilities and applying climate solutions at home among others. Sponsors of this event include the following: New Community Church, Menlo Park; Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Redwood City, St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Mountain View; Spark Church, Palo Alto; and Congregational Church of San Mateo.

On Sunday March 1, Rev. Antal will preach about taking on the challenge of climate change at First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto. The worship service starts at 10:00am. After the service, he invites attendees to an informal Q & A session. No reservations are needed to attend the service or discussion. Attendees may park in the church parking lot.
