Creating a Pepper's Ghost Illusion With AI Tools

Learn and leave with your very own Pepper's Ghost Illusion Hologram featuring animated AI visuals. New media artist, Laila Jhané will share her experience building an 8-foot-tall installation for the ATL25 Art Fair and then help participants build a miniature-sized version of their own using their phone or tablet.

This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the creative potential of everyday technology, using cell phones and simple materials to explore immersive reality effects. The workshop will allow attendees to discover the basics of AI while experimenting with traditional artistic practices. Each session empowers participants to think beyond the usual constraints, highlighting how technology can expand the possibilities of art.

All registered participants will be required to create a free Runway ML account ahead of the workshop.

What will participants walk away with:

• Participants will learn Pepper's Ghost technique fundamentals and create their own miniature holographic display to take home and expand on.
• Participants will learn minor editing skills that will help them create more visuals and
• learn new AI Software that they can use at home.

About the Artist Facilitator:

Laila is a passionate new media artist based on the Internet, dedicated to exploring themes of transformation and its impact on individuals. Guided by authenticity, she merges storytelling, emerging media such as AI, and immersive techniques to craft experiences that provoke introspection, inviting audiences to reflect on personal and collective change.

Her solo exhibition, Where the Mind Goes, debuted at Eyedrum in Atlanta, showcasing her commitment to bridging art and innovation, while her Pepper’s Ghost installations employ illusion and technology to create layered, otherworldly encounters. Laila’s work has also been featured at AVC Fest, Convergence, and other notable showcases, solidifying her presence in both art and tech circles.

Beyond her artistic practice, Laila has led workshops at Spelman’s Innovation Lab and Third World Newsreel, covering everything from integrating AI into the filmmaking process to exploring the creative potential of Pepper’s Ghost illusions. By pushing the boundaries of narrative and experiential design, she encourages creatives and audiences alike to see the world in a fresh, transformative light.

Laila will have her large-scale Pepper's Ghost-inspired installation on view at the ATL25 Art Fair on September 24 - 28 at Pullman Yards. City in a Forest is presented by The Public Art Futures Lab, a Cultural Partner of the ATL25 Art Fair.

How to Find Us: The Public Art Futures Lab (Underground Atlanta, 88 Lower Alabama Street, Atlanta, GA 30303). A simple way to find us is by using the MARTA Five Points Station as your starting point (30 Alabama St SW, Atlanta, GA 30303).

Exit the station and cross Peachtree Street toward the Underground Atlanta Tower. Look for the Underground Atlanta signage and follow it to a stairway leading down to a courtyard. Once in the courtyard, look for the row of glass doors, use the far-right entrance glass door. You’ll see the Public Art Futures Lab directly ahead, and restrooms are located to the right of the space.
