About the event
~ Encounter the beauty of God in creation and creativity ~
The visual arts and art making are wonderful ways to encounter God.
Through the creative process we listen to the voice of the maker and feel the compassion of God through our creating. The process of artmaking becomes a journey of discovery. We open ourselves up to what God is revealing to us in these beautifully intimate moments, charged with the Holy Spirit.
Created to Create 2025, takes inspiration from the Arts and Crafts Movement, this retreat celebrates the value of craftsmanship, simple forms, and the inherent beauty of natural materials.
You will be facilitated by the Revd Tom Studman and Jo Whittall who will help you exercise your creative character and encounter our creator God. Whether you are an artist, crafter, doodler, or someone longing to express your creativity—regardless of skill level—you are warmly welcomed to participate.
This visual arts-focused retreat will provide a space to connect with your creative character and encounter God through art-making. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement, we will explore participatory activities such as; printmaking and stained glass-inspired creations featuring the movement's iconic flowing organic lines.
There will also be ample opportunities for independent art-making, giving you the freedom to create and reflect in the beautiful surroundings of Foxhill House and Gardens.
Through collaborative and personal artistic experiences, we will draw closer to God, appreciating His beauty in creation and the work of our hands. Come and be part of this creative journey, where the act of making becomes an act of worship.

Hi, I’m the Revd. Tom Studman. I’ve always loved art-making because it helps me connect with God, playfully and creatively. I studied at St. Mellitus College, where I wrote my dissertation on the Theology of Art-Making, digging into how creativity reflects God’s image in us. I was ordained in 2019 and now serve as the incumbent of St. James, Moss Side, and St. Edmund’s and St. Margaret’s, Whalley Range. St. Margaret’s, is a beautiful Arts and Crafts Movement church with a rich history, a place I centre stage art making and the arts in faith exploration.
Hi my name is Jo Whittall. I am a pastoral worker in the Diocese, I also volunteer as verger at the cathedral and am a member of the spirituality and chaplaincy team at my local hospice.
For as long as I can remember I have had a gift of creativity - I recall knitting when I was 4 years old. Over the years alongside a career in social work I enjoyed a multitude of crafts, including stained glass, needlework, silversmithing, papercrafts, dolllshouse and miniatures to name a few. These experiences have all drawn me to where I am now working in mixed media.
I came to 'Faith Art Journaling' following the death of my husband when I couldn’t find the words to express my feelings. I found the Bible, prayer, reflection and art as a pathway along my journey of grief - my first art journal was created and 11 years later I am still actively journaling. It is an important part of who I am as a person and draws me closer to God. I have been leading / co-leading faith art journaling sessions since 2016.
