About this Event

Brittney Appleby (she/they) is a queer interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker with a primary focus in experimental analogue film and photo techniques. She currently resides on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam First Nations, otherwise known as Vancouver, Canada. Brittney's work spans across multiple analogue film and photo mediums including 16mm, super 8 motion picture film and 35mm, 120, large format, polaroid, cyanotype and wet plate collodion photography. She is inspired by the materiality of analogue practices and incorporates her background in painting, drawing and printmaking into her films and photographs. Common themes Brittney explores in their work are the body, chronic illness, trauma and memory.

Brittney holds a Diploma in Visual Arts from Langara College and graduated with their BFA majoring in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Spring 2021. She has mentored under Lindsay McIntyre, Geoffrey Wallang, and most recently the Cineworks darkroom with Jack Beatty learning traditional and historic cine and photo film processes. Their film works have been featured in multiple festivals across Canada, and internationally in Italy, France, Portugal, Hungary, Slovenia, Cyprus, Australia and across the US. Brittney is passionate about accessibility in the arts and has taught multiple low-barrier workshops with several arts organizations in the lower mainland.
