Exploring the Artist's Book

In this workshop, we will delve into the concept of the Artist's Book, examining its definition and the processes involved in its creation. The session aims to encourage participants to engage with their own artwork, considering different ways to record and present their artistic intentions outside of conventional formats.

To provide further context, here is an excerpt from the latest La Trobe Journal, titled ‘Creating and Collecting: Artists’ Books in Australia’, written by guest editors Des Cowley, Robert Heather, and Anna Welch.

What Is an Artist's Book?

While there is no single agreed-upon definition, an artist's book is generally described as a book made by an artist, intended to be a work of art in its own right. This broad definition encompasses a wide range of practices, including traditional printmaking techniques such as woodcut, etching, and lithography, as well as modern methods like offset printing, photocopying, and digital production. Artist's books may take many forms, whether they are unique or produced in multiples, including the familiar codex, altered books, sculptural pieces, or forms that challenge the very idea of what constitutes a book. This diversity makes artist's books an exciting area for both artists and researchers.
