𝐆𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐧 (𝟏𝟎𝟒𝟗𝐦, 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐫𝐨) - 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤
𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐧 𝐚' 𝐂𝐡𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫 (𝟏𝟎𝟖𝟕𝐦, 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐫𝐨) - 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧’𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥
These remote hills are easily accessed on good tracks and stalkers’ paths. Although the lowest of the three, Creag Pitridh offers the best views. It is possible to bike-in as far as the head of Lochan na h-Earba.
Start from the A86 1km SW of Moy Lodge at the CP by the bridge, NN433830. Further parking is available 440m further W. Cross the bridge over river Spean and follow the track SE, turning S at the next junction, E around the foot of Binnein Shuas to the head of Lochan na Earba. Turn right on to a track that climbs SE beside the Allt Coire Pitridh. After about 800m at NN469804, leave the track and climb NNE to the small rocky summitᵉˣ of Sgurr an t-Saighdeir. Continue NE up the crest of the escarpment to a plateau on a spur with a small lochanᵉˣ, NN479813. Turn E and climb to the summit of Creag Pitridh. Descend S to avoid crags on the E aspect, turning SE to reach the col. Head E up the slopes of Geal Charn to its summit.
Descend SW to the footpath junction at NN490804. Take the right branch down to the head of Coire Pitridhᵉˣ and locate the junction ** on the Bealach Leamhainᵉˣ at NN489800. Climb SE up the path until it levels at a small spur. Leave the path and climb steeply S up the fall-line, avoiding crags, until the gradient eases. Head SW, over the small summit at 977mᵉˣ (972mˡʳ) and continue up to the Munro summit of Beinn a’ Chlachair.
There are three options for the descent:
1. (longest, but scenic) Head SW down the long ridge to reach the footpathᵉˣ beside the Allt Cam just N of the stepping stonesᵉˣ. Follow it N to Lubvan, where it continues as a track. Continue N to the junction NW of the reservoirᵉˣ and rejoin the outward route NW back to the start.
2. (shortest, but assess avalanche risk!) Return E, curving around Coire Mor a’ Chlachair then descend N on steep grassy slopes to reach the outward route.
3. (Easier, less steep, soon reaching a path). Return to the path junction at the Bealach Leamhainᵉˣ. Follow the path down W by the Allt Coire Pitridh to rejoin the outward route.
*For a short day, climbing only Beinn a’ Chlachair:- Continue E up the track beside the Allt Coire Pitridh. It soon narrows to a footpath. Continue up to the junction on the Bealach Leamhainᵉˣ at NN489800. Turn SE and follow the route to the summit described above.
**For a shortish day, omit Beinn a’ Chlachair:- Descend from Gael Charn to the path junction on the Bealach Leamhainᵉˣ at NN489800. Follow the path down W by the Allt Coire Pitridh to re-join the outward route.
