About this Event

Crafting Creativity is a full day of workshops sponsored by the Teaching Artists Guild (TAG) and hosted by Giselle Rocha and Yvette Roman at the heARTSpace. This full-day seminar targets teaching artists in various nonprofits across San Diego. In addition to the two workshops, we will feature a poetry reading by a young poet, a group reflective activity, and a panel discussion with young adults who have participated in arts programming across San Diego. Collaborating organizations include: Teaching Artist Circle, Teaching Artists Guild, Cr34tive Gathering and heARTSpace.

Workshop 1: Lead by Giselle Rocha

Workshop 2: Lead by Yvette Roman, Crafting Curriculum with SEL, CARMA, and CYD Principals

This workshop is designed as a collaboration with other teaching artists to brainstorm and create a curriculum that incorporates Social Emotional Learning (SEL), CARMA principles, and Creative Youth Development (CYD). Supportive material presented in the workshop will enhance teaching artists' ability to foster emotional intelligence, critical consciousness, and place youth voices at the forefront of artistic expression.

Poetry Reading

Poet Samira Hassan will read a poem she developed with the AjA Project / Memoria Terra

Panel Discussion: Art Education Through a Youth Lens: A Conversation

Join us for a panel discussion with three young artists who will share their unique experiences navigating various youth art spaces across San Diego County. This open conversation aims to support a collaboration between teaching artists and youth, providing a platform for young voices to be incorporated into the creation of programming. The young artists will discuss the impact of arts education on their lives, the challenges they've faced, and their visions for the future. This is an opportunity for teaching artists to gain valuable insights and for youth to express their perspectives.

Bios:

Yvette Roman is a bi-national artist, arts educator and curator. She holds a B.A. from University of California San Diego UCSD in Visual Arts and Cultural Anthropology, along with a Museums Studies Certificate from Mesa College. Her practice revolves around a passion for making art accessible through community-organized collaboration, community engagement, and the co-creation of artistic visions. Yvette has been involved in various initiatives.

As a Far South Border North recipient, she co-created Cuentame, a campaign aimed at strengthening borderlands consciousness through intergenerational storytelling and art-making. The Fleet Science Center selected Yvette as an artist in residence for Art for Planetary Health, representing San Ysidro. She co-founded Residencia Ranchito Aurora, a collaborative space where artists along the border can creatively explore, share knowledge, and strengthen the arts along the border. In 2022, she collaborated on Collective Memory, a public arts project through the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture (Park Social) and was invited by Chicanx Sin Fronteras and La Esmeralda to participate in a dialogue with Mexico City students about the Mexican-American experience.

Yvette champions social cohesion and networking through her project, Cr34tive Gathering. In response to the pandemic, she established ArteDomus and Art Box San Diego, both organizations focused on the therapeutic benefits of art: for expression, coping, and Personal/social development. As a Teaching Artist, she developed curriculums and taught various mediums at The San Diego Museum of Art, Sherman Heights Community Center (Club Amistad and Jóvenes), City Heights Music School, Generate Hope, Space 4 Arts, San Ysidro School District, Olivewood Gardens, A Reason to Survive, Casa Familiar, Villa Merced, New Alternatives and La Maestra Foundation.

Yvette serves as a steering committee member at the San Diego Creative Youth Development Network, completed a fellowship at Rise San Diego (Cohort 8), and is currently participating in the Community Arts Education Leadership and Intercultural Institute (CAELII) cohort. She has also curated exhibitions at the Centro Cultural de la Raza, The San Diego Repertory Theater, and Amigos del Rep. From Jan 2022-July 2023 she re-established and curated the ARTS gallery (A Reason to Survive), a space where artists of all ages come together with creativity, courage, and compassion to build community.
