About this Event
Ohio native, Toni Morrison’s masterpiece, Beloved, captures the anguish of America’s legacy of slavery. At the center of her narrative is her main character, Sethe's M**der of the child of her womb, in an act of confounding, biblical proportion. She slaughters the innocent, her Beloved. Director, Jonathan Demme’s 1998 film version of Morrison’s novel aspires to bring this tale the screen. We will discuss the continued relevance of this film to our tumultuous world today and to ourselves.
We will ask: what does psychoanalysis have to say about such an appalling act? Can our theory of the mind speak to such a rending of the heart?
Please watch the movie prior to attending the event.
No psychology or analytic background necessary to join and enjoy.
