A short 3-hour course for humanitarian practitioners on safely engaging with children while on mission.
About this Event

Amongst the most vulnerable members of the community in a post-disaster event are children, who are often at risk. The work of humanitarian practitioners often intersects with children either intentionally or tangentially. Engaging with children safely is in the interest of both the practitioner, and the organisation they represent, and the children themselves. We provide a course to cover the basics of engaging with children safely while on mission.

What you’ll learn
  • List the factors that contribute to child vulnerability and risk in humanitarian contexts.
  • Articulate the necessary child protection requirements for missions.
  • Apply knowledge of the differences between adult and child interactions to demonstrate safe and effective engagement.

This is a practice-based course with real-world examples and peer learning.

Who it’s for

The training is suited for:

  • humanitarian practitioners who are deploying on humanitarian missions
  • volunteer teams that will engage directly or indirectly with children on their mission
  • subject matter experts interested in humanitarian work but not versed in child protection principles
  • team leaders who will need to lead teams on humanitarian missions

No prior experience on child protection is needed.

Why learn with us

At Vector Volunteer Services, we build capacity for principled humanitarian action. Our facilitators bring real-world field experience, and our sessions are grounded in practice, not just theory.

Trainers
Julieana Binte Suhaimi

Julieana is an outdoor educator with a strong foundation in child-centred practice and experiential learning. Her work with children focuses on emotional safety, relationship-building, and the development of essential life skills, particularly in environments that require adaptability, trust, and care.

With experience facilitating learning in dynamic and outdoor settings, Julieana brings a grounded understanding of how children respond to uncertainty, unfamiliar environments, and changes in routine. Her approach is informed by developmental principles and emphasises empathy, clear communication, and respectful engagement with children as individuals.

As a trainer, Julieana is beginning her work with humanitarian professionals, drawing on her educational background to support adults in thinking more intentionally about how they interact with children in challenging contexts. Her sessions focus on practical reflection, ethical considerations, and translating child-focused theory into approaches that are realistic, sensitive, and applicable in the field.
