IAS Biddle Family Scholar Dr Chris McGlory delivers a seminar on their research, fully titled "Counteracting muscle loss in clinical scenarios of disuse: insights from ‘simple’ human experimental trials" -
Skeletal muscle is a vital organ, serving as a primary site for glucose and amino acid storage while generating the force required for movement. Across the lifespan, periods of skeletal muscle unloading due to injury, surgery, or illness are common. These episodes trigger rapid declines in skeletal muscle mass and strength, increasing the risk of metabolic dysfunction. This presentation will examine the cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning skeletal muscle loss during disuse, with a particular focus on insights from controlled human experiments. Key differences between preclinical models, healthy human studies, and clinical populations will also be discussed, alongside advances in methodologies for assessing muscle protein turnover. The presentation will conclude by highlighting emerging strategies to attenuate disuse-induced atrophy and preserve muscle function.
