In today's economy, math isn't just for classrooms—it's everywhere. It influences who we date, the news we consume, the impact of our votes, the education we receive, and the careers we pursue. An invisible layer of math shapes our world, yet few notice it, and even fewer understand it. Whether we realize it or not, our ability to "speak math" is a critical determinant of social and economic power. Counted Out explores how math empowers individuals by enhancing financial security, boosting civic engagement, and strengthening our democracy. It shows that reimagining math education can help all of us thrive.
The film examines who gets encouraged on the journey to math literacy—and who gets left behind. It highlights the early obstacles that distance many from math fields, unknowingly closing doors to hundreds of exciting careers in science, engineering, technology, medicine, and media. With only 25% of US high school graduates proficient in math, we're limiting the next generation's access to higher education, fulfilling careers, and active civic participation. This disproportionately affects those already impacted by systemic racism, sexism, and poverty. Counted Out sounds the alarm: the future of our democracy depends on all of us speaking the language of math.
