About this Event

Fou Gallery is delighted to host “COSMISM: A Tunnel of Transcendence” - a sonic journey featuring experimental composers Jenn Grossman and Chamberlain Zhang. This immersive performance bridges music and visual art, creating a dynamic interplay between sound and, the current solo exhibition at Fou Gallery featuring artist Ming Wang.

By weaving together architecture, sound, and improvisation, Jenn and Chamberlain invite audiences into a transformative listening experience—one that transcends physical and perceptual boundaries. Their performance resonates with the themes of the exhibition, extending its contemplative and ethereal qualities into the realm of sound.

Curated by Chamberlain Zhang, COSMISM is a monthly performance series initiated by China Institute Next Gen x Serica (CINGS). Dedicated to fostering emerging artists with Asian heritage in New York and beyond, COSMISM serves as an evolving social experiment—cultivating a communal space where music, art, and collective transformation converge. Fou Gallery is proud to support this initiative, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing cross-disciplinary dialogue and amplifying the voices of Asian artists.

Musicians:

Chamberlain Zhang is a Beijing-born, Brooklyn-based composer, performer, and installation artist whose work manipulates perceptions of time and space through sound, light, and immersive environments. He has performed at venues like the San Francisco Tape Music Festival and Chabot Space and Science Center, and his label, Cultivated Sound, is influential in New York’s experimental music scene. Chamberlain received the Frog Peak Collective Experimental Music Award for outstanding experimental music performance in 2018. He was invited to attend an artist residency at the 4D sound institute in Budapest, Hungary in 2021. His debut album In the Praise of Shadow featuring legendary American avant-garde percussionist William Winanut is selected by Ryuchi Sakamoto for his curated playlist- SKMT picks on Spotify.

Jenn Grossman is a Brooklyn-based experimental composer and sound sculptor. Her work focuses on embodiment, circular time, and immersive listening experiences. She's held residencies at I-Park Foundation, Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center, presented audio works at venues and festivals such as the Black Mountain College Museum, the New York Transit Museum, the Museum of the Moving Image, the Megapolis Audio Festival, Cistern Dreams at the Deep Listening Institute, amongst many NYC venues and galleries like Areté Gallery, MISE-EN_PLACE, Flux Factory, and Theaterlab. She also curates and organizes for a group she started known as “WISE: Women Innovating Sound Experience,” which highlights women and non-binary artists working in experimental sound, media arts and technology.
