What is conscious dance?
Conscious dance is about authentic movement and expression, getting out of our minds and following whatever movements or gestures our bodies want to do. There is no technique, no choreography, and no right or wrong moves. It is a practive of attuning to our bodies in the present moment to the music. This way of moving and dancing provides opportunities to release stress, increase self-connection & creativity, move through emotions, and experience joy and lots of fun. This event is for people who want to move their bodies to music with others, in a judgement free and substance free zone.
What to expect:
- The event runs from 7-8:30pm.
- Doors open at 6:50pm and close at 7:15pm. Please do not arrive after 7:15pm.
- You will be greeted at the entrance to the dance hall with a quick orientation, and you can ask any final questions before entering.
- The music will last for approximately 80 minutes. It will start gently, build up to a peak tempo and intensity, and wind down to a gentle finish. There will be no instruction or guidance. Some people like to end in shavasana like in yoga class, resting on your back in relaxation. For 80 minutes, you are free to move or not move however you like as long as you are mindful of others.
We will move and dance to many styles of music. From classical and pop, to world music and electronica, to funk and disco, the music is thoughtfully chosen to support a variety of ways to dance and discover fun and creative expressions of movement.
- For the final 10 minutes, there will be a closing circle for those who wish to share about their experience.
*Please refrain from talking with others once you enter the dance floor and for the duration of the music.
*Please do not engage in intentional physical contact or any partnered dance with others unless you know them well and have their clear consent to do so. This is not an event to 'pick up.'
*You are welcome to rest, stretch, and/or meditate at the side of the room (and often people do!), but please support a safe space by keeping your attention mainly to yourself.
*No outside shoes on the dance floor. Barefeet, socks, and indoor shoes welcome.
A portion of the proceeds will go to a charity each month.
