About The Lamplighter
The Lamplighter is a warm, traditional corner pub dating back to 1871, formerly known as The Overstone Arms. It has been a family-run, independent free house since 2009 and is well known for its quality real ales, farmhouse ciders, and craft beers. The jazz nights take place upstairs in the Drawing Room, a cosy and intimate space, similar in feel to The Sun Inn and Shipmans. The Drawing Room is also big enough to host quartet and quintet bands, making it a great addition to the current venue roster.
Accessibility: The jazz nights at this venue take place upstairs and are accessible by stairs only, owing to the age and structure of the building. Step-free access is not available. I recognise that not all venues are fully accessible. For this reason, the main jazz nights are held at The Sun Inn, where accessible facilities are available and assistance can be provided to support access to the venue. If you would like to discuss access requirements, seating, or need assistance in choosing a suitable event, please get in touch. I will always do my best to make reasonable adjustments so that everyone can enjoy live jazz.
About Cool Jazz Collective
Cool Jazz Collective is a dynamic jazz ensemble that blends traditional and contemporary influences to deliver a smooth and captivating jazz experience. The evening's show will feature the quartet and include the following musicians:
Elaine Riches - Vocals
Elaine’s musical journey began with the violin, but her true passion revealed itself through singing. With a background in classical choral and a cappella work, she brings a rich musicality to her performances. Though a latecomer to jazz, her love for the genre runs deep. Largely self-taught, Elaine possesses a natural talent for harmony, phrasing, and interpretation. Her distinctive tone, influenced by greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall, blends subtlety with an impressive range - from warm, resonant lows to captivating highs that leave a lasting impression.
Neil Riches - Keys
Neil began playing piano at a young age, progressing from classical studies to jazz training at Leeds College of Music, where he earned the award for 'Best Performance on a Keyboard Instrument'. His career spans cruise ships, theatre productions, and supporting a wide range of artists. With a dynamic and expressive playing style, Neil’s lush harmonies and tasteful improvisation bring vibrancy to every performance - a perfect match for Elaine’s voice.
Chris Green - Double Bass
Chris is a skilled double bassist and a key member of Cool Jazz Collective. He forms the backbone of the group’s trio, quartet, and quintet line-ups, providing the rhythmic and harmonic foundation that shapes their smooth, cohesive sound.
Les Cirkel - Drums
At just 15 years old, Les became the original drummer for NYJO, later going on to perform with 1960s stars including Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black, Dana, Matt Monro, and Des O’Connor. Over the years, he has also played with acts such as The Drifters, The Platters, Brooke Benton, and The Three Degrees. His film credits include Hope & Glory, Dance with a Stranger, and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
On stage, Les has performed in the original West End productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, as well as The Rocky Horror Show, Me and My Girl, and Little Shop of Horrors. Throughout his career, he has also worked alongside renowned artists including Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Marian Montgomery, Liza Minnelli, and Westlife.
