Conversations Matter provides a program of education and research to improve healthcare communication and supportive care across regional cancer centres in Victoria.

We warmly invite health professionals (clinical staff) working in regional cancer centres and linked health services in Victoria to attend this virtual workshop.

This is an interactive workshop and you will leave your camera on and need a working microphone for the session.

About the workshop

Responding appropriately to patients, families and carers is crucial when they need support or care beyond your scope. This helps ensure those who use our services receive the best possible treatment and support for their individual situation.

In this interactive workshop, you will explore practical strategies and evidence-based skills for responding to patient needs and referring to additional services.

This includes

responding to stories, disclosures and questions
managing your responses to emotions such as anger and distress
knowing how and where to refer patients, families and carers in an empathic and effective way.

Learning Objectives

During this workshop you will:

Gain awareness of the evidence-based frameworks and models for effective communication in healthcare settings.
Reflect upon personal challenges in conversations with patients, families and carers that involve making referrals.
Analyse conversations and identify the skills that improve communication and support.
Apply new skills through guided experiential learning with the facilitator.

Facilitators

This webinar will be led by experts in healthcare communication from Deakin’s Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare (OCPH).

Course Details

We will be using Zoom to deliver this virtual workshop.

The workshop will run from 12.30pm to 4.30pm and includes a break.

The Victorian Department of Health has partnered with the Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare (OCPH) at Deakin University to deliver Conversations Matter Skilled Conversations Building Excellence in Cancer Care to make this training opportunity possible.
