An onstage conversation with prizewinning authors Zilla Jones, Tanya Talaga, and katherena vermette moderated by John Toews of McNally Robinson Booksellers at the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq.

Writers’ Trust of Canada is a charitable organization that supports Canadian writers and writing – and we turned 50 this year. To mark our anniversary, we are putting on special events in cities across the country, including in Winnipeg.

About our Authors:

Zilla Jones was selected in 2025 for WT Rising Stars. In 2023, she was a finalist for the RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers and won the Writers’ Trust McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize winner.

Tanya Talaga won the 2017 Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, and she was shortlisted for that prize in 2025. She has been nominated twice for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction in 2017 and 2019.

katherena vermette was a finalist for the 2016 Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and she won the same award, now called the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, in 2021.

Our Moderator:

John Toews is the event coordinator at McNally Robinson Booksellers in the Grant Park Mall.

With 50 years of supporting writers as the truth-tellers of our world, Writers’ Trust of Canada believes that we need writers to help us navigate the future. Writers’ Trust beneficiaries of 50 years of literary programming will bring their ideas to stages and communities across the country with the goal of helping us see that, despite how it can feel in tumultuous times, there is more that connects us than divides us.
