Topic 239 - Chit Chat or Deep Conversation? 21 May 2026
Find us: Look for a furry animal toy on a table in Brunelli Cafe, Adelaide CBD. You will need to buy a coffee or something. This is a 90 minute chance to practice English, once every two weeks.
CONVERSATION STARTERS
1. What do you like to chit-chat about? Everyone chit-chats and you can do it with limited vocabulary.
2. Chit-chat will only take your English a limited way. You use the same words again and again. How can you grow past that?
3. You need words to talk about stuff that really interests you. Not everyone might want to talk about your favourite topic. How can you find people like that to practice with?
4. Your job probably needs English words and expressions you won't find in chit-chat. Can you find people, maybe online, to practice stuff like this with?
5. How to talk to women and men across genders is really different in different cultures. Australia has people from over 300 different cultures. Think of some expressions to use in these situations.
6. What is a "deep conversation" for you? Who would you talk like this with?
7. Australians are usually friendly with strangers, on the surface. It is often hard to get to know them deeply. Why is this? What about in your home country?
8. Try to make a list of all the people you say SOMETHING to in a day. What do you say? How do you get past simple greetings?
9. What kind of mistakes do you think you usually make speaking English? Are they important? How can you teach your brain to fix them?
10. Have you tried talking to AIs like ChatGPT or Gemini? In 2026 these things have become so smart that they can chat with you about anything, sometimes better than a human.
